What will become of my heart, which trusted the unsteady, sweet words
of the man of the land where, when in the courtyard
the mountain folk drank the strong, serpent-venom-like fermented liquor,
swarming with bees from the comb,
fermented in the long-jointed waving bamboo,
mixed with sweet, fragrant fruit grown ripe in the summer breeze
from the thick-trunked mango tree savoured by bees,
mingled with the matching flakes of jackfruit whose flesh is relished,
and, having offered it to the god on the lofty peak of the white-crested mountain,
drank it as women wearing fresh-sprouted leaf-skirts served it,
and so forgot their dark hillside millet field;
where, unable to bear that an elephant seized the millet,
youths and elders gathered with their kin and wander inspecting their bows?
