What did he ponder, my friend, that the ancient beauty
he tied fast to himself should perish from my forearms lined with fine, saw-cut bangles?—
He who crossed the wasteland tract in a distant region where a different language is spoken,
where the kino tree of upright, well-formed trunk and black stem,
putting on its rich colour on the slope of the hill of Eḻil
in the good land of Naṉṉaṉ,
who, when bards with their destitute kin come to him,
without hesitation pours forth vast wealth of precious jewels
taken after crushing difficult strongholds, laying waste frontiers with his strength-filled heart—
where a male elephant, having fed on flame-like morsels [of kino flowers],
places on its striped forehead its large, weakened trunk,
resembling a snake crawling upon a stone.
