‘Like a drummer holding his drum embraced against him,
behind the virali dancing-girl in an ancient festival town of dancers,
with a dancing peacock in front on the rock ledge where noisy cascades roar,
the illiterate male monkey, head of a large troop,
clutches close the huge jug-like fruit of the bent old jackfruit tree
and summons his sweet mate—such is the lord of the hills;
he comes from a good clan, does not part from those he joins,
speaks no hurtful words, and is full of love’—
thus, having spoken skilfully, you rightly united us.
You have done well, indeed, my beloved, beautiful companion!
More than the poem full of charm establishing the fair fame
of Añci of the tall chariot and swift-galloping horses,
more than the ancient music sung by the renowned bard
according to the order of notes he has measured out,
and even more than the new style newly composed,
and sweeter than our wedding day itself, is he now to me.
