ஆள்வினைப் பிரிதலும் உண்டோ ? பிரியினும்

தெண்நீர் வேட்ட சிறுமையின் தழைமறந்து

பொம்மல் ஓதிப் புனையிழை குணனே?
Is there truly parting to perform one’s task? Even if you must part,
listen now—long may you live, my heart!
Though you know not this truth: the passage of waking days
and the coming of old age are like fleeting dreams,
and love’s nature is an excellence rarely obtained—
yet, after crossing the arid wilderness along the path devoid of tree shade,
where the hot summer wind whose mouth is fire, having shaken the leaves of the ñemai tree
with a loud rustling sound as it strikes the lovely swaying bamboos,
whirls up dust from the long, white alkaline tract,
and in the sweltering forest where severe heat twists the trees,
the handsome buck with shining spots and six-branched horns, who accompanies his weary, gentle doe,
gazes at the dried-up pool, forgetting green leaves in his miserable longing for clear water,
and falters, drooping because there is no water to drink,
will you not remember—
the virtues of her of thick tresses and crafted jewels,
who speaks kind words to us
on the magnificent couch where her smile is a festive ornament,
pressing her gentle chest upon the fallen petals of flowers,
while her lovely, screwpine-scented hair that softly sheds fragrant pollen dust
is cool to the touch, she who receives and protects those who arrive in distress
under the great cool canopy that knows no cease in remembering guests?
