Downstream eating what falls from the washings tied upstream, / the wide-mouthed turtle rolls like a clear-faced kiṇai drum / tightly laced with cords, with the watercock as the drummer— / the man from such a town, seeing me suddenly in the wide long street, / seized my forearms adorned with golden bracelets; / 'Mother!' I cried out, and he let go of my hands; / not content with our ancient love, with a tongue like a stone / joined with paste by the minor blacksmith of Nannaṉ's Parampu, / I did not tell this at all to my mother; / though the lord of Vallam of tall stalks of paddy, / the kinsman of the Cōḻas of swift, huge elephants and fine chariots, / does not think upon their good feet, / the foes still endeavor to push against the gate; / furthermore, though without grace toward our abundant thick tresses / he has slain us, his murder is not flawed; / O you of bright-gleaming hair, like the cane of Nannaṉ Āy / at the front ghat flourishing with cascading water lilies!— / what is your intention?
