நீலத்து அன்ன நிறம்கிளர் எருத்தின்
காமர் பீலி ஆய்மயில் தோகை
இன்தீம் குரல துவன்றி மென்சீர்
ஆடுதகை எழில்நலம் கடுப்பக் கூடி
கண்ணேர் இதழ தண்நறுங் குவளை .
குறுந்தொடர் அடைச்சிய நறும்பல் கூழை
நீடுநீர் நெடுஞ்சுனை ஆயமொடு ஆடாய்
உயங்கிய மனத்தை யாகிப் புலம்புகொண்டு
இன்னை ஆகிய நின்நிறம் நோக்கி
அன்னை வினவினள் ஆயின், அன்னோ!
என்னென உரைக்கோ யானே- துன்னிய
பெருவரை இழிதரும் நெடுவெள் அருவி
ஓடை யானை உயர்மிசை எடுத்த
ஆடுகொடி கடுப்பத் தோன்றும்
கோடுயர் வெற்பன் உறீஇய நோயே?

Like the sweet, soft-paced grace / of the plumage of a lovely peacock whose neck has a color like blue gems / when they gather together in sweet calls, / joining the cool, fragrant kuvaḷai lilies whose petals resemble eyes / into a short garland tucked in your fragrant, thick tresses, / you do not bathe with your companions in the deep water of the long mountain pool; / with a languishing heart, seized by loneliness, / looking at your color that has become like this, / if mother asks, alas! / what shall I say— / about the affliction caused by the lord of the lofty-peaked mountain, / where the tall white waterfall descending from the crowded great mountain / looks like a waving banner raised aloft on an elephant wearing a frontal ornamental plate?
