Spreading to bury all quarters, dropping down torrents,
great clouds with thunder have poured rain, so that in every hollow
the striped frogs sound like drums in a dancing arena;
like strings of lustrous jewels of refined gold hung high,
the long clusters of the golden shower tree make the whole forest beautiful;
flame-like gloriosa lilies bloom on the tops of shrubs;
mullai and wild jasmine flower together; in the rocky ground,
fresh mountain pools with gaping mouths overflow for beasts to drink;
the rainy season has begun this morning! Yet our lover,
in the vast, great camp of the fiercely wrathful king,
consumed by the lust for victory, does not think of us.
What shall we do, my friend?
At the swift coming of evening, which feels painfully
like an appointed murder, it is hard to swim across!
