Spreading deep darkness across the wide-mouthed sky,
bringing the day to a close with a faint, sorrowful appearance,
the distressing evening has arrived, devoid of rage.
In the wilderness tract, mistaking a planted hero-stone for a man and kicking it,
the wild elephant breaks its sharp, jagged claws
on that weapon-like slab like a dark palmyra stem;
where brave men's arrows lie aimed in wait, and because no travelers pass,
the dead find none to remove their bodies in that fierce, sun-baked wasteland,
to which you brought me!
Unable to bear the sorrow, you have thought
of turning back—may you live, O heart!—
to her of sweet, delicate innocence, with soft, sparse tresses
fragrant with fresh, cool flowers of the rough-trunked kino tree
granted by a spirit at Kāmūr of victorious-speared, generously munificent Kaḻuvuḷ.
