Guarded by a deity of inexorable tradition, / in the wide expanse of country that gazes upon hanging hives of rich honey, / within the dread precinct of Pāḻi, / like the rare treasure of priceless jewels hidden / in the spacious mansion of ancient Vēḷ elders, / having pondered the virtues of her, so hard to attain, / we were indeed distressed, yet you would not agree! / Going and coming like a rope that moves up and down / on a swing ridden by many, tied to a sturdy branch, / you suffer, like the skin of a great tuṭi drum / beaten resoundingly in a cattle-seizing raid / by curved-bow warriors who raided the fierce borderlands / of sharp-speared [kings] and of horses that traverse long roads, / swelling and then slackening, / and like a snake that has lost its foraging jewel! / You have utterly languished—may you live, my heart! / Like a fort where the wrath of kings is appeased, closely guarded, / exceedingly hard to reach is our tormentor here.
