Troubled as the borderland was seized, choked with sponge-gourds, / in the cattle-assembly ground where the houses have fallen to ruin, / where an elephant with pillar-like legs rubs its broad back / against the leaning old pillars of the public hall whose core is hollowed out, / dejected from the exhaustion of crossing the impassable wilderness tract, / when the great, dismal evening brings loneliness, / while my courageous heart urges onward the journey, / with hands locked over legs in a solitary seated posture, / she broods on her state, not knowing ours, / the young woman of lush, abundant hair and fair jewels! / Fitting into her bed in the deep darkness of midnight, / with a heart that sulks in deep sorrow, sighing softly, / grief surging as tears brim in her cool eyes with fair lids, / flicking away with the nail of a tender finger / the trickle of tears that flow down, wetting her broad shoulders, / like the king of a single fort with rough-edged parapets / besieged completely by kings of victorious spears, / lofty elephants, and battle-slaying prowess— / has she forsaken sleep? Pitiful indeed is she!
