‘He will not stay away long; do not grieve / endlessly for him!’ you say, my friend! / Merely to test the stringing of their bows, / even if newcomers possess no valuables, untrained young men kill them / and feed them to birds at the clamorous crossroads / where a pack of jackals gathers with its kind to gorge on fat, / and bathed in gore, their strong, thick fingers, / the male desert vulture perches on / the white, stout, branch-tied tree trunks; / since it was the duty of his clan, young Peruñcenni, / the great lord of the Cōḻas with unyielding, solid shoulders / of victorious deeds, seeking to accomplish his unfinished task, / crushed Pāḻi of copper-like ramparts / and severed the fresh heads of the new-sprung Vaṭukar; / if my eyes knew that he who crossed the fearful, fiery wilderness, / resembling their slain elephants' tusks, / would return without harm, / then indeed, O friend, they would not drown [in tears]!
