So that her companions like herself and mothers like me could see, / while the noble people celebrated in the gold-rich great city / like Uṟantai, with Kāvērī's gardens, belonging to the Cōḻas / of swift chariots and elephants skilled with their trunks, / washing fragrant powder in a splendid festival, / when we sought to arrange many things, she spoke not a word; / but in the cleft of the rocky ground where bamboo and gooseberry trees stand tall, / as the long aerial roots of the banyan tree on the desert pathway / brushed smoothly against her speckled thighs, / taking hold of them with her bangled forearms, / gripping her broad, fine hips clad in a dense, dark string of green gems, / her hair tossing like the plumage of a dancing peacock, / swinging high as her chosen lover pushed her— / she has gone without a thought, she of thorn-sharp teeth and coral mouth, / casting off the youth's chaplet and her anklets, / to become a dweller in an unknown land—how cruel!
