O man of the town where the otter, smelling of raw flesh from the pond,
searches at dawn for vāḷai fish as prey!
I was ashamed, lord, I was!—Like the well-fighting
Kaṇaiyan who felt ashamed when he saw the different state
of the Arya wrestler, defeated when gripped in the hands
of [his foe's] full, rounded, drum-like shoulders,
suffering under the mighty, wrestling-bent chest of the bard—
she came secretly, softly, spoke good words,
and said, 'O innocent girl with dark, damp tresses! I too
am from your hamlet, a woman of the neighbourhood,
and a younger sister to you!' With her own cool hands
and soft fingers wearing rings, she caressed,
stroking my brow and my hair,
that woman of radiant forehead, who came by day and departed!
