Listen, may you live, my friend!—In our mountain,
using the harsh-mouthed rattle cut from bamboo,
we drove away the birds on the slope of the high mountain covered in groves
where they seized the bushy ears of little millet, sown after slashing
the sweet-smelling sandalwood trees. As we stayed upon the high loft
set within the fork of a kino tree bearing sweet, bright clusters on the tall, dark slope,
listening to the sweet sound of the bee humming in the golden, sweet pollen,
'O innocent, good women with dark, damp tresses!
Pierced by a light arrow and sore from the wound,
did a tusker of tall tusks come in distress
and cross near your cultivated field?'
So spoke and passed on a lad with a strong bow,
while his ferocious hounds snarled and bounded around him.
Greatly desiring his chest decked with sandalwood and his grace,
we suffer distress here; not understanding this,
with an innocent heart confused, thinking it is a spirit's frenzy,
mother brought the wise priest of Vēlaṉ.
If he says, 'This disease has come because our lord possesses her;
I know the remedy to cure it,'
what if we ask him: 'Piercing the very heart of the enraged,
mad elephant, with an arrow rolling in meat like smeared flesh,
following the footprints of forest beasts,
does your lord go hunting?'
