Like the sharp teeth of a watchful wildcat
are the striped, soft buds of the delicate-vined atiral jasmine;
finding no place to sell, merchants carrying overflowing small baskets
set them aside—those wilderness flowers to be worn atop the head,
intertwined together with honey-dripping mullai jasmine
and woven into my cool, fragrant tresses by him who embraced me.
Whenever I behold my knot of hair, bound in its excellence, the ancient,
former adornment comes to mind, my friend!
Even if he returns in a few days from today, going away,
my eyes will not at all close in sleep,
thinking of him who traversed the wasteland tracts of scorching heat,
where an elephant, unable to shake its massive tusk in musth,
lets its strong, withering trunk, having taken mouthfuls,
appear like a serpent entering a hill!
