The kḷā fruits have turned sour; wood-apples have ripened;
the rich curd matured from the milk of small-headed ewes,
together with fine hulled grain of field-grown varaku,
and the winged white ants emerging from damp-mouthed anthills after rain,
are cooked into a sweet-sour hot mash;
while butter from a red cow melts upon its steaming surface,
after your young servants feast upon it,
you too, in the small hut with an auspicious doorway like a newly made pot,
under a bent-post thatched shed enclosed by a thorny fence,
where your wife with adorned, dark tresses serves food,
to touch that milky meal—on a day,
O munificent lord! Pray come and stay [with us]!
Frightened by the folded-lip whistle of the forest herdsman
as he turns back his goats, the little hare
hides in the thick, dark bush in the common place of our small, good village
in this barren, dry-ground countryside.
