Like cool rain falling upon the dark blossoms
of thick-stemmed kuvaḷai grown in a cool pond,
your large, serene, rain-like eyes are filled with tears.
It would indeed be good if he returned now,
to end your grief of streaming moisture—may you live, my friend!—
he who crossed the forest of burning mountain crests,
where sway bamboo canes and dark hollow bamboos creak
upon high cultivated hills bearing well-formed trunks of ñemai trees;
where in the waterless wide expanse where scorching rays destroyed moisture,
along the path where shade has vanished, consumed by blazing heat,
a handsome stag with branching antlers like dry wood
runs yearning for a mirage that gleams like a honeycomb,
and, wandering astray with a bewildered heart,
calls to his grazing mate in a feeble, despairing voice,
which travellers through the perilous wilderness hear, mistaking it for a human cry!
