"While I praise my daughter's great innocence,
while her mother observes her pride and discharges her duty,
without having the wedding in the festive, broad mansion where drumheads never dry,
he thought: 'Let the wild, bewildered depths where dense rainclouds have departed
and split the rocks be easy for the dark-skinned girl
with ascending creepers spread on her spotted, lined lap!'
Without waiting for the season to soften, the swift, fierce bull-like youth
surely resolved to traverse
the forest where bamboo grains ripen, its thin leaves trembling in the scorching summer wind,
among high, long sky-soaring peaks reaching far aloft,
where a vulture comes to alight on a dark-trunked yā tree,
mistaking for flesh the great stripped red bark of the tooth-brush tree,
whose scaly trunk was gored and deeply wounded by a fierce male elephant shaking in rage."
