While dried, ripe pods of the siris tree rattle in their lovely clusters
like small drums on a dancing ground,
upon the broad, great hill where the hot season lingers,
the tiger leaps in the deserted desert tract, having slain an elephant
that rose in the dry, waterless riverbeds;
through such wilderness tracts our lover has departed;
our dark complexion must turn to yellow pallor spreading fine spots
like the beautiful flowers of the sponge gourd;
the public scandal is greater than the sweet, loud roar of the bards
on that day when Titiyaṉ cut down the punnai tree,
hewing its ancient, sturdy trunk at the battlefield of Kurukkai
belonging to Anni;
and will I wander, bewildered and suffering from distress,
pining with affliction at the loss of my lover like Ātimanti,
without sleep from terrifying grief,
like a fortress with breached walls thrown into turmoil
at the fierce battlefront of Vāṉavarampaṉ, possessing a victorious fine spear
and golden garlands, who stirred up the ocean?
