ஒண்தொடி நெகிழினும் நெகிழ்க;

Tired of standing in the mud, the red-eyed water buffalo,
breaking its strong tether in the night when the town sleeps,
clears with its horns the fence of sharp thorns
and enters the water-rich field, making the fish scatter together,
tangles the hollow-stemmed vaḷḷai creeper, and feeds on the lotus’s
cool blossom where bees hum—O man of such a town!
Who are you to me? Should we sulk with you?
They say you brought another woman to our house
with long, dark hair, glistening, flowing beyond its clasp,
and celebrated a wedding! We will not speak of that.
May you live long, our master! Even if my bright bangles
become loose—like Aḷḷūr rich in stored heaps of paddy,
belonging to victorious Ceḻiyaṉ of the flashing sword-army,
who crushes and ruins enemies in difficult battles with tuskers—
let them become loose! Go, great lord! Who is there to stop you?
