நெடுநீர் இருங்கழிக் கடுமீன் கலிப்பினும்;

The sea's roar having died down, and boats having departed,
though swift fish revel in the vast waters of the dark backwaters,
and though red-lipped women spread scandalous gossip,
keeping his long chariot adorned with fine ornaments waiting,
without leaving our presence even during the day,
he used to come constantly indeed, the lord of the cool maritime shore.
Now, swimming through a passion hard to unite in order to depart,
without thinking, 'Who are we to those who do not come?',
if you go in secret to the ancient, prosperous town
and speak, what [will come of it], O bard?—saying, 'Look, at night,
even if one of a pair of the curved-beaked aṉṟil birds nesting in the palmyra by the house
is separated, they do not sleep,'
as tears fill her eyes, concealing them,
the young woman with a bright forehead [asks], 'What shall I do?'
