'On the slope where high trees are entwined with valli vines,
calling out in distressing clamor
because she desires the new gold-like blossoms on the lofty boughs of the rising vēṅkai tree,
the Kurava girl cries out, causing the small mountain village
to lament, thinking, "That is a powerful tiger seizing cows
from the mountain slope with dark caves on the stony peak!",
so that men bearing bows in their hands rush with an uproar—
shall we inform mother that the lord of such a land
possesses a broad chest that delights the heart? Or shall we not let it be known?'
Of these two courses of deliberation, one has been chosen—
may you live, my friend!—
'Even if sweet life should depart from this body,
do not cause it to be said: "The pallor in your daughter’s
choice-flower, kohl-rimmed eyes
is a disease of desire!"'
