பொருளே காதலர் காதல்;
'அருளே காதலர்' என்றி, நீயே.

You do not understand, may you live, my friend!
To fill the gaping cracks struck by the fierce rays
of the fast-moving disc that shines upon the sky, banishing darkness,
the white flowers of the wild muruṅgai scatter through the tall forest;
in the endless, vast expanse withered and devoid of water,
where along the sorrowful path shaded by rough-barked trunk of the uḻiñcil,
through the spurge jungle where a red dog of sharp fangs roams with his famished mate,
the curled-nosed, blind beetle with shriveled flesh inside wanders,
those who pass by stay in the sweet shade of hero-stones bearing inscriptions
for those felled by the archery of maravar warriors with unerring aim;
crossing the fork of the difficult wilderness tract,
with a resolute heart that cannot withhold what is fitting
by ever saying 'there is nothing' to those who lack,
our lover loves wealth more than he loves us—
yet you say, 'Our lover's virtue is grace!'
