விருந்தின் மன்னர் அருங்கலம் தெறுப்ப,
வேந்தனும் வெம்பகை தணிந்தனன்; தீம்பெயற்
காரும் ஆர்கலி தலையின்று: தேரும்
ஓவத் தன்ன கோபச் செந்நிலம்,
வள்வாய் ஆழி உள்உறுபு உருளக்,
கடவுக காண்குவம் - பாக! மதவு நடைத்
தாம்புஅசை குழவி வீங்குசுரை மடியக்,
கனையலம் குரல் காற்பரி பயிற்றிப்,
படுமணி மிடற்ற பயநிரை ஆயம்
கொடுமடி உடையர் கோற்கைக் கோவலர்
கொன்றையம் குழலர் பின்றைத் தூங்க,
மனைமனைப் படரும் நனைநகு மாலைத்,
தனக்கென வாழாப் பிறர்க்கு உரியாளன்
பண்ணன் சிறுகுடிப் படப்பை நுண்இலைப்
புன்காழ் நெல்லிப் பைங்காய் தின்றவர்
நீர்குடி சுவையின் தீவிய மிழற்றி,
'முகிழ்நிலாத் திகழ்தரும் மூவாத் திங்கள்!
பொன்னுடைத் தாலி என்மகன் ஒற்றி,
வருகுவை ஆயின், தருகுவென் பால்' என,
விலங்கு அமர்க் கண்ணள் விரல்விளி பயிற்றித்
திதலை அல்குல்எம் காதலி
புதல்வற் பொய்க்கும் பூங்கொடி நிலையே!

As new guest-kings give tribute of rare gems,
the king’s fierce wrath of enmity has abated;
the dark rainy season with sweet showers has commenced its roar;
and so that the chariot’s thick-rimmed wheels press down and roll
upon the red soil, painted like a picture with velvet insects,
drive the horses, charioteer, so that we may behold!
Where calves with plump gait, tied by tethering ropes, feed at swelling udders,
sounding calls with throaty cries and pattering hooves,
herds of cattle bearing yielding milk, with ringing bells at their necks,
are followed by herdsmen carrying staffs in hand and curved pouches,
playing their pipes of koṉṟai wood as the buds blossom into evening,
sweet as the taste of water drunk by those who have eaten
the green fruit of the small-seeded, fine-leaved gooseberry
from the gardens of Ciṟukuṭi belonging to Paṇṇaṉ,
who lives not for himself but for others:
as she babbles sweetly, 'O ageless moon that shines with budding light!
If you come to touch my son with his golden talisman,
I will give you milk!'—
calling out with her fingers, her sideways glances alluring,
look at the state of our beloved, creeping like a flower-laden vine,
with spotted waist, as she gently deceives our son!
