Because the scorching sun blazes so that rocks split / along the long sun-parched pathway where the tender shoot of the date palm withers, / and chisel-edged sharp gravel hurts the feet as one treads, / in the forest of blackened bamboo that knows no end: / I do not grieve that my daughter has gone / with the youth who is like a powerful tusker! / But staying behind, I sigh like the bellows of a blacksmith's forge, and grow faint; / with a heart burning as if scorching, / I find no sleep, dreaming dreams: / feeling ashamed of his wound received while fighting / on the battlefield of Veṇṇi against Karikāl Vaḷavaṉ with his bright army, / as Cēralātaṉ sat facing the north to die on the ruined battleground, / the noble ones who heard that grievous, bitter word / underwent the great demise to accompany him to the world hard to attain; / like them, my life that does not go, / abandoning me and departing in longing for my beloved [daughter], / makes me grieve!
