It is truly laughable, my friend! Yesterday, / as the clear pool, bright as a sapphire, was stirred, / a buffalo with black horns fashioned like iron / tore the soft leaves of the water lily, grazed on the many blossoming flowers of the blue water lily, / and as the fine pollen of the kāñci tree on the bank showered upon its wet back, / it entered its resting place, chewing its cud; / from such a town with cool shores came the bard, / seeking to unite his lord, whose broad chest wears a firm garland, / with a new courtesan adorned for her wedding day; / as a cow that had just calved rushed at him in the street, shaken with fear, / dropping his lute, he stumbled into our house! / Seeing that, concealing the joy swelling in my heart, I went forward / and said: “This is not that house; that one is your house!” / Looking at me and then at himself, / with a bewildered heart, he stood worshiping with joined hands!
