A red-legged female bird with small, soft feathers / swam with flapping wings across the high, vast sky, / arrived amidst the glowing heat of the sun, and finding no fruit, / remembered the fertile season of fruitful days, and grew faint; / on the withered, leafless, slender twig of an itti tree with a short trunk / where it found no refuge, the long, thin aerial root with a scruffy head / brushed a dark, rough boulder, and tossed by the wind, / swung like the raised trunk of a huge elephant / along the long sun-parched path amidst hilly lands. / While I am alone here, did her choice, delicate forehead, / shedding the great, fine beauty of the full moon of many rays spreading pale moonlight, / take on the hue of the small flower of the ridge gourd? / Like those suffering from fresh, deep wounds / in the tumultuous battle where Ceḻiyaṉ of the flagged chariot and horses with trimmed manes / besieged the ancient harbour of Musiri on the deep sea / and slew elephants that fell dead, / she has broken down greatly, / weeping endlessly, midnight and day!
