You have eyes that have lost the great grace / of paired flowers buzzing with bees flourishing in a cool pool; / you suffer greatly—may you live long! / On the northern, wide shore of loose sand by the abundant waters of the Toḻunai, / like Māal who stepped upon a tree to break it / so the shepherd maidens could dress in cool leafy skirts, / the male tusker bends a tall yā tree to feed tender shoots / to his soft-headed, gentle cow-elephant, / and brushes away the hovering bees from his wet temples, O friend! / Along such a path went the one who dwells far away, / departing from us in pursuit of wealth hard to acquire in a distant land, / causing your plump arms with swollen joints to grow thin, / with never a thought for the time he caressed / your back adorned with cool, fragrant red water lilies, / glowing with fresh beauty from the sweet, cool mountain spring / on the high range rich in sandalwood sung by Antuvaṉ, / the cool Paraṅkuṉṟu of wrathful Murukaṉ whose long spear with a bright blade destroyed the demon Sūr!
