'Truly, they alone have performed penance who do not die / by the seizing of the god of death, but die when others [slay them],' / so thinking, those who set forth to distant lands to accomplish deeds by their own strength / look upon the long wall marked with days [of absence]; suffering distress, / do not sink down [in grief], may you live, companion! / Without tarrying, with the zeal that roars like thunder, fixing on their strong bows / fine-striped, durable bowstrings with green notches, / having arrows sunk deep into perilous chests, along with many men, / taking the white tusks of majestic elephants, / they celebrate the daily joy with toddy bought by bartering paddy; / even if he should gain Veṅkaṭam of festival-filled, excellent glory, / belonging to Pulli of great liberality who subdued the Maḻam lands, / the chieftain of Kalvar wearing ankle-rings on his well-formed feet, / it would be hard for him to grow accustomed [to stay], / having forgotten to embrace your bosom adorned with fine ornaments, / glowing with shapely breasts of splendid hue, / like Potini, the golden, long city of Neṭuvēḷ Āvi / with stout shoulders resembling drums!
