நலம்துறந்து உறைநர் சென்ற ஆறே!

What shall I do, my friend? Even as the striped cuckoo sings praising the heavens,
the clouds depart without showing mercy, abandoning the rain;
and in the high, gravelly, vast expanse, tree leaves have fallen and branches stand bare.
In order to send to hell [their victims], insolent warriors with ruthless looks
and notched arrows sharpened with files rush by night across the long expanse of gooseberry trees;
their names and glory inscribed, feather-crested upright hero stones erected on every path
look like an enemy vanguard with shields propped on spears;
in that battlefield strewn with the dead beneath rock piles of leaves and stones
resembling lines of well-tied, spotted shields of kings who set out to win alien-tongued lands,
they say: "Along with the bodiless phantom driving a mirage,
many shining pebbles glisten together like fireflies fallen on the earth!"
—along such a path our lover went, abandoning our beauty!
