"Mother, may you live, listen mother! Did you hear anything
of the sweet-sounding waterfall singing so that the dense kutaḷam blossoms bruised
in our garden's cool pool? May you live, listen mother! A lightning bolt struck
like a snake and severed at the trunk the swing tied to a high branch of the aśoka tree
with lustrous sprouts dyed red in our garden! Did you hear that too?"
Not knowing that, mother lay sunk in deep sleep; on top of that,
the hour came when all living creatures slept. Thinking, "If my lover
comes, this is the season," he did not let the yearning heart of us,
whose shining, radiant bangles slipped loose, be in vain—
he has arrived, may you live, my friend!—
having crossed the chilly, fierce wasteland tract, frightening even by day,
with wide-mouthed python lairs, where white-tusked elephants, amid the clamor of simple female elephants with small heads,
plunge and search with loud cries as a swift-whirling torrent sweeps away their calves,
and unceasing floods rise higher and higher from clouds gathered in flocks in the sky, shedding roaring rain!
