Swimming through the narrow wasteland tract of the dark backwaters / where crooked-legged crocodiles and sawfish roam, / you indeed came by night—lord of the cool sea-shore!— / Are we somehow difficult for you to attain? / While we chase away birds alighting on the drying varied fish / brought by our father who stirred the wide expanse of swelling waves, / upon the ancient shores abundant with muṇṭakam, / driving your tall chariot drawn by horses with clusters of bells / so that the wheels sever the soft red creepers of bifurcated-leafed aṭumpu / whose bright many flowers bloom, / come by day into the lovely puṉṉai grove, / where the gleaming clusters bright as lightning open into gold / shedding cool, fragrant, fresh pollen!
