When the skilled-hunting bear, rising at daybreak, / tires of the sweet fruit on the high branches of the iruppai tree, / like an egret probing buds it tears open the moist-tipped, tall mound / raised through the joint effort of numerous termites in a low-lying nest, / seeking its food; / there, in the dried-up ground split open, hurting the eyes / as the scorching sun beats down, upon a withered, sturdy branch / of a roadside marāam tree, / a swooping kite perches and laments in that endless hot expanse; / crossing that hostile, difficult arid tract, driven by / an eminent noble mind—like Viḷaṅkil of the greatly generous Kaṭalaṉ / who overcomes the clash of shining spears of his foes, slaying their tuskers— / while our kohl-lined, lovely dark eyes weep: / O lord, will you depart for wealth acquired far away?
