Because the sun with manifold rays, which brought the bright day,
burns so that the yield of the fertile, great mountain is ruined,
the green-eyed elephant, having stirred the fearful pool in the large mountain side
where waterfalls have ceased, and found no yield of water,
eats moss and shrinks to one side with his cow exhausted by hunger;
though he departed out of desire for rare wealth
in the sun-glowing wide expanse where the joints of bamboos split,
he is possessed of great, immense love, O confidante!
Even if he were to obtain the Kuṭanāṭu realm,
protected by Kuṭṭuvaṉ with tightly bound drums,
where settlements rich in lush fields know no hunger,
and if curved-horned buffaloes loathe the lotus,
they dwell in the rich shade of the crooked, mature jackfruit tree,
beyond the narrow wilderness of tall-trunked wild jackfruit trees
where the fierce-eyed Maḻavar rise for cattle-lifting
by burial cairns raised of gravel where black-hued antelopes rest—
he will not stay, forgetting your exquisite beauty, O you of gentle, noble gaze!
