Because toddy-drinking bowls are swirled, lively prawns / leap like bows released from their lock from beside the roots; / the long cane creeper with beautiful thorns resembling a saw’s teeth / on the bank lining the pond among fields / entangles broad leaves of white water lilies in flowing streams; / when shaken by the swaying north wind, / it tightens and loosens like bellows of a forge pulled vigorously; / O man of the town with kāñci trees and fertile garden fields! / They say that within her bright-bangle-wearing circle of friends / you desired and took a young maiden; / and that—like the uproar of seizing elephants on the day / when two great kings fell on the battlefield, / in the expanse of Paruvūr rich in white paddy, / belonging to the Cōḻas of noble war-elephants and deadly combat, / the father of Aḵtai of golden ornaments on anklets, / firm thighs, and dark complexion filled with beauty— / through many mouths has turned into town gossip!
