with which you nourish all choice things, O Sarasvatī, make that available here to suckle!”—thus he consecrates [her] with a mantra. [With the words,] “You are the turban of Aditi,” having bound her with the halter, he makes her obedient to her rule. [With the words,] “May Pūṣan [lead] you,” he lets the calf loose, for bodily wholeness. [With the words,] “Moo for the Gharma!” he turns [her] around. […] for the Gharma […]. “About to perform the Pravargya tomorrow, he should separate the calf and kid on the previous day; likewise in the morning or evening having released the two cows. Upon the loss of the milk-cow for the Gharma, he should milk the vow-cow from then on. For the Gharma, one should milk half the vow-cow, two udders each here; upon the loss of both the Gharma-cow and vow-cow, the twice-born should proceed with ghee. But upon the loss of the goat, [he should proceed] with cow’s [milk], or bring another cow; upon total loss, he should bring milk drawn from an uncalved cow or curds.” They milk the cow. […] they milk her. They pour out […] when they milk the goat. Right into the Gharma they milk it; indeed they pour out nourishment when they milk the goat. Into the Gharma they bring nourishment together. Therefore they say: “Come to me with your share of nourishment! O Indra and Aśvins, drink the Gharma of bees' honey! O Vasus, worship! Svāhā!” The two pour nourishment down into the Mahāvīra; into the Gharma they bring nourishment together. With [the words], “To the ray of the sun, winning the rain, svāhā!” he recites over that which has ascended upwards. What oblation rises up from here causes the rain to fall from yonder [sky]. By his own oblation he leads down the rain from the sky. With [the words], “You are Gāyatrī-natured, you are Triṣṭubh-natured,” he takes up the two tongs. With [the words], “You are Jagatī-natured,” [he takes up] the supporting ladle. By means of the meters he grasps it. With [the words], “With Heaven and Earth I grasp you,” he grasps the Mahāvīra with the two tongs; these two indeed are the tongs; with these two he grasps it. With [the words], “With the intermediate space I hold you up,” he holds it from below with the supporting ladle; moreover, the supporting ladle is the intermediate space; he holds it right in the intermediate space. [With the words,] “May I be able to bear you, approved by the gods and ancestors!” […] [With the words,] “To the ocean, to the wind, svāhā!” he offers.
