They proceed with the Course of the Cows.
The cows are the Ādityas; it is the course of the Ādityas that they pursue.
The cows sat at a sacrificial session, desiring to obtain hooves and horns;
in their tenth month hooves and horns arose.
They said:
'We have obtained that desire for which we consecrated ourselves; let us rise.'
Those that arose are these horned ones.
Then those who sat, saying, 'We shall complete the year,'
their horns fell off through lack of faith; these are the hornless cows.
Yet they pressed sap; therefore, having reached all the seasons, they rise afterwards,
for they pressed sap.
The cows have won the love of all, the favor of all.
He attains the love of all, the favor of all, who knows this.
The Ādityas and the Aṅgirases contended for the heavenly world:
'We shall go first, we!'
The Ādityas went first to the heavenly world,
the Aṅgirases afterwards, in sixty years.
As the introductory atirātra sacrifice, the twenty-fourth [day as an] ukthya, all the
abhiplava six-day periods [proceed, while] other days fill out, that is the course of the Ādityas.
The introductory atirātra sacrifice, the twenty-fourth [day as an] ukthya, all the
pṛṣṭhya six-day periods [proceed, while] other days fill out, that is the course of the Aṅgirases.
Just as a direct pathway goes straight, so is the abhiplava six-day period to the heavenly world;
and just as a high-road makes a circuit, so is
the pṛṣṭhya six-day period to the heavenly world.
When they go by both—going by both one does not suffer injury—
it is for the attainment of both desires: that which is in the abhiplava six-day period, and that which is in the pṛṣṭhya.
