"Let us two question [someone]," they said. They questioned Prajāpati. Prajāpati said: "It was indeed for reconciliation that you looked upon this one; it has indeed become shared between you two." "So be it." Thus it became shared between the two of them: one and a half chants belonging to the one, one and a half chants belonging to the other. The sacrifice belongs to Indra and Agni. Mitra and Varuṇa departed from the cattle as out-breath and in-breath, thinking, "Too small [are we]; the cattle will not breathe with the two of us being too small." Those cattle, not breathing, lay puffed up. They reported this to those two: "Mitra and Varuṇa, the out-breath and in-breath, have departed from the cattle; these [cattle] lie here not breathing, puffed up." The two ran up and said: "Let our cattle breathe through you two!" "Not through the two of us who are too small," they said. For those two they assigned this Maitrāvaruṇa ājya [stotra]. Thereupon the cattle breathed through those two. He who thus knows this conquest of Agni, wherever he desires, "May I conquer here," he conquers there. And he who thus knows this equal partnership of Indra, wherever he desires, "May I conquer here," he conquers there. And he who thus knows this assignment of Mitra and Varuṇa, wherever he desires, "May it be arranged for me here," it is arranged for him there.
