He could not distinguish them, being of one form. He saw this Pauṣkala sāman. With it he diversified their forms. They became of various forms: white, red, black. Prior to that, they were indeed of one form, red only. He obtains cattle of many forms, of various forms, and becomes rich in cattle, who knows thus. Now the Pauṣkala [sāman]: Puṣkala Āṅgirasa, desiring cattle, performed austerity. He saw this sāman. With it he praised. Then he obtained cattle. This is a cattle-winning sāman. He obtains cattle and becomes rich in cattle, who knows thus. Because Puṣkala Āṅgirasa saw it, therefore it is called Pauṣkala. It has a four-syllable finale. Cattle are four-footed. The Uṣṇih is, as it were, cattle; [it is] for the obtainment of the former cattle.
