‘Homage to the Fathers who sit of old, homage to those who sit together! / I yoke speech, hundred-footed; I sing [her] of a thousand paths, / gāyatra, traiṣṭubha, jāgata, brought together in all forms; / the gods made their dwellings [in her].’ / As to [the words], ‘Homage to the Fathers who sit of old’: the Fathers indeed sit near here beforehand; it is to them that he thereby pays homage. ‘Homage to those who sit together’: it is to those Brahmins with whom he sits near, intending to perform the priestly office, that he thereby pays homage. ‘I yoke speech, hundred-footed’: it is speech, indeed, hundred-footed, that he thereby yokes. ‘I sing [her] of a thousand paths’: it is speech, yoked, having become [a path] of a thousand ways, that he thereby sings. ‘Gāyatra, traiṣṭubha, jāgata’: these, indeed, are the three pressings; these very ones he encompasses within himself. ‘The gods made their dwellings [in her]’: thereby he makes the sacrifice accompanied by the gods.
