This is a monthly sacrificial session. The success that is with it is indeed success. The month, moving round again and again, attains the year. When they sacrifice, when they sit at a sacrificial session, they seek to obtain the year, they desire to attain the year; for there is nothing outside the year. These fourteen nights are indeed self-rule: seven days ahead, seven below. Now, the world which is in the middle, that is self-ruler, that is the heavenly world. They go to the summit of the sun, they go to self-rule. There they are not followers of another. These nights amount to the Virāj and to the Gāyatrī. These two are indeed the most vigorous of meters: the Virāj and the Gāyatrī. [They think:] 'Those which are the most vigorous of meters, in those two let us prosper, in those two let us be established, with those two let us chant praise.' They reach the Virāj. Thus they reach the lordship and sovereignty of food of the Virāj. The Virāj is deficient by two; two are deficient in a woman, from which she reproduces, and thereby there is procreation. The introductory Atirātra is sacred to Vaiśvānara; for ahīna Soma sacrifices have their introduction sacred to Vaiśvānara.
