Dominion and realm, cosmic order and truth—these are below; ascetic heat and fiery splendor, svadhā-offering and immortality—these are above. As to dominion here, whether Indra, or Varuṇa, or King Soma, that is that. Now as to the realm, the divine folk, the Maruts, that is that. Cosmic order is night. Truth is the day. Ascetic heat is lightning. Fiery splendor is that thunderbolt of lightning which falls, that is that. The svadhā-offering is rain. Immortality is food. Regarding this there is this verse: 'Dominion, realm, cosmic order, truth are placed below brahman; / Ascetic heat, fiery splendor, svadhā-offering, immortality sit above; in the middle shines brahman.' And this is that: in the middle shines brahman. And those who know thus sit above. Just as a nobleman would be placed face-to-face, so is this brahman placed face-to-face, for non-overstepping.
