When the gods sacrificed, Bṛhaspati was their Udgātṛ. Gauḥ and Āyāsya were Prastotṛ and Pratihartṛ. Prajāpati was the householder. Indra was the Brahman priest; he recited after the Brahmin. Mitra and Varuṇa were the two Maitrāvaruṇas. Agni was the Hotṛ; he served as Āgnīdhra. The two Aśvins were the Adhvaryus. The Maruts were Neṣṭṛ and Potṛ. The All-Gods were the Acchāvāka. Arbuda was the Grāvastut. Viṣṇu praised the sacrifice. Soma was the Unnetṛ. Brahman called the Subrahmaṇyā, or [it was] Gāyatreya. This twelve-day rite is a sacrifice of all the gods. By all these deities the twelve-day rite is performed. For all these deities are made present in the twelve-day rite. Therefore, if one should desire an invitation among these deities, then one should desire an invitation among the priests. When he sacrifices, he sacrifices having become these very deities; when he officiates for another, he officiates having become these very deities. There is no affliction whatever for him who knows thus. Whosoever slanders him incurs affliction.
