On the fourth of Shawwāl the Sultan halted at a palace called Tilbat — with i under the first dotted t, no vowel on the l, a over the single-dotted b, then a t like the first — which is seven miles from the capital. The vizier ordered us to go out to him, and we went out, each person with a gift of horses, camels, Khurāsānī fruits, Egyptian swords, mamlūks, and sheep brought from the land of the Turks. We reached the gate of the palace, where all the newcomers had gathered, and they went in to the Sultan according to their ranks, and he bestowed on them linen garments embroidered with gold.

He went out, accordingly, accompanied by those who had arrived for the purpose of being presented; each taking his present with him. In this manner we proceeded till we arrived at the gate of the palace in which he then was. At this place the secretaries took account of the several presents, and also brought them before the Emperor. The presents were then taken away, and the travellers were presented, each according to the order in which he had been arranged. When my turn came, I went in and presented my service in the usual manner, and was very graciously received, the Emperor taking my hand, and promising me every kindness. To each of the travellers he gave a dress of honour, embroidered with gold, which had been worn by himself, and one of these he also gave to me. After this, we met without the palace, and viands were handed about for some time. On this occasion the travellers ate, the Vizier, with the great Emirs, standing over them as servants. We then retired. After this, the Emperor sent to each of us one of the horses of his own stud, adorned and caparisoned with a saddle of silver. He then placed us in his front with the Vizier, and rode on till he arrived at his palace in Dehli. On the third day after our arrival, each of the travellers presented himself at the gate of the palace; when the Emperor sent to inquire, whether there were any among us who wished to take office, either as a writer, a judge, or a magistrate; saying, that he would give such appointments.

When my turn came I went in and found the Sultan seated on a chair. I took him for one of the chamberlains until I saw with him the Malik al-Nudamāʾ Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Kāfī al-Harawī, whom I had come to know during the Sultan's absence. The chamberlain made obeisance and I made obeisance; then the Amīr Ḥājib, the Sultan's cousin named Fīrūz, received me, and I made obeisance a second time following his obeisance. Then the Malik al-Nudamāʾ said to me: "Bismillāh, Mawlānā Badr al-Dīn" — in the land of Hind they called me Badr al-Dīn, and everyone who belongs to the people of learning is called simply Mawlānā. I drew near the Sultan until he took my hand and shook it, and he kept hold of my hand and began speaking to me in the kindest way, saying to me in the

Persian language: "Blessing has descended; your coming is blessed; set your mind at rest. I shall show you such favours and grant you such bounties that the people of your country will hear of it and come to you." Then he asked me about my country, and I said to him: "The land of the Maghrib." He said to me: "The land of ʿAbd al-Muʾmin?" I said to him: "Yes." Every time he said a kind word to me I kissed his hand, until I had kissed it seven times; he bestowed a robe of honour on me and I withdrew.

The Sultan held him in great esteem and addressed him as "brother", and he had come to him from his country several times.
