Then I travelled from the city of Ūjah to the city of Multān — its name is spelled with u after the m and a t with dots above. It is the chief city of the land of Sind and the residence of its amīr of amīrs. On the road to it, ten miles from it, is the river known as Khusraw Ābād, one of the great rivers, which can only be crossed by boat. There the goods of those crossing are searched most thoroughly and their baggage inspected. Their custom at the time we arrived was to take a quarter of everything the merchants brought and to levy a duty of seven dinars on every horse. Two years after our arrival in Hind the Sultan abolished those duties and ordered that nothing be taken from the people except the zakāt and the tithe, when he gave his allegiance to the caliph Abū al-ʿAbbās the ʿAbbāsid.
