DOG, CROW. These marks of degradation were occasionally inscribed on stones in the case of villages degraded for any offence against the king. For such instances and causes of offence see Lawrie’s Gazetteer, p. 17, 708, etc. They appear also on grants and charters as symbols of the degradation awaiting those who should contravene them; but these instances can only by a stretch be included in the discussion of decorative art.
