The greater part of the Theban force, however, was either killed or captured. The Plataeans, having thus repelled the attack, sent a messenger to Athens to report what had happened and to ask for help. The Athenians, on receiving the news, immediately sent a force to Plataea, and also took measures to secure the safety of the city. They also sent a message to the Thebans, demanding the release of the prisoners, and threatening to kill the Thebans who were in their hands if any harm came to the Plataeans. The Thebans, fearing for their own men, agreed to the terms, and the prisoners were exchanged.
