Those who escaped the fire were hunted down in the streets and alleys. Many were killed, and others were taken prisoners. The Thebans, having achieved their object, and fearing that the Plataeans might receive reinforcements from Athens, began to retreat. But the Plataeans, who had now recovered from their first panic, and seeing the small number of the Thebans, rallied and attacked them. They blocked the gates, and the Thebans, finding themselves trapped, fought desperately. Some climbed the walls and jumped down, most of them perishing in the fall. Others, finding a gate which had been left unguarded, managed to escape, but were pursued and killed in the countryside.
