The reign of Marcus was disturbed by the rebellion of Avidius Cassius, who assumed the purple in the East. The emperor, instead of being provoked by the treachery of his general, expressed his concern for the safety of his family, and his desire to spare the blood of his subjects. The rebellion was suppressed by the death of Cassius, and the clemency of Marcus was extended to all who had been involved in the revolt.
