The death of Marcus Antoninus, which happened in the camp at Vindobona, was lamented by the whole empire as a public calamity. He was succeeded by his son Commodus, whose reign is the era of the decline of the Roman empire. The virtues of the father were not inherited by the son, and the vices of Commodus were the source of the misfortunes which afflicted the state.
